They're here...

Grandma and Grandpa in Hoi An at last!
Grandma and Grandpa have finally arrived in Hoi An, and all is well with the world (at least our world - soemone should probably start the Valium drip in Grandma's world).  After a very exciting day of preparations for their arrival, we awoke at 2:30 a.m. to make the trip to Danang to meet their plane.  So much excitement for such an early hour!  They arrived.  Their luggage arrived.  We all squeezed back into the taxi and headed north.  It was non-stop horror story telling time for the kids, and they talked Grandma's ear off all the way back to Hoi An.

Tetmas tree delivery boy arrives at the hotel.

Merry Tetmas (note the tinsel)
We dropped G&G off at our favorite hotel, the Than Binh III (our home for three weeks when we first arrived), and went home for a long nap.  Then it was time to show Grandma and Grandpa around town.  This is when the usual motorbike frogger game began.  We tried to teach G&G to hop, skip and jump through  traffic with their eyes half closed and their fingers crossed while saying a little prayer.  I think the words I heard coming out of Grandma's mouth were not of the praying sort.  We did survive the walk to the Ancient Town and started at Cargo (our favorite bakery/cafe) for breakfast. Next it was a stroll along the river to the market, where G&G got a taste of the market scene and smells.

The city is bustling in preparation for the Tet holiday.  Blooming flowers and glowing lanterns line the streets.  The market has doubled in size with vendors of Tet treats and worshipping supplies. It was a good little taste of Hoi An life.  Next we headed to the rice paddy for a visit to our house.  Foster, Brianna and Nolan proudly showed off their living spaces, their toys and their dog, Coconut.  Grandma pulled out the tinsel for our Tetmas kumquat.  We hung it respectfully in one big clump. And the rain came down.

This is how  you hang tinsel, right?
We have not been able to shake the grey somber skies for weeks.  We are ready for a few hours of sunshine and a day at the beach.  Rainy season is supposed to be behind us.  It looks like the weather has other plans. Stay tuned for the soggy adventures of Grandma and Grandpa in Vietnam!

  1. Oh my gracious. Tears are streaming down my face and the wrinkles are more deeply set from laughing so hard. It feels like this blog was written from Christopher, Kelly, Uncle Joe and me. You gotta know "Gramma" to appreciate the "Tetmas Tree and the tinsel". I'm certain that Gramma is thrilled to be celebrating anything "....mas" with all of you! (Somewhat surprsied about the placement of the tinsel...someone should be scolded for that.) Thanks for the photos and the vivid writing. I can see, feel, smell and sense it ALL. Take good care of them both and send them back to us safely. Thanks for the great smiles and reassurance that everyone appears to be happy and well. (Did I see a smile on Brianna's face?) Love, Aunt Laura

  2. Love the tinsel on the Tetmas tree. Timothy says, "It looks cool!" Brings backs those days of decorating a tree with your parents! I hope Grandma appreciates the efforts to decorate for her! Have a wonderful time. Love, Andrea and Timothy
