Dong? Seriously? How can we possibly take middle school children to a country where the local currency is called 'dong'? When we first announced our change in plans to our children, one of their first questions was what kind of money we would use there. A quick glance at the guidebook provided the answer...dong. The giggling started. "How many dongs do you have Mom?" Tee Hee. Once we determined that you can have one dong or 17000 dong (no 's') some of the middle school humor wore off. However, it only took a little flipping through the guidebook to find more excuses for laughter. When we came across the subtitle 'Phat Lon Dong' we were all rolling on the floor. Even Nolan was in on the implied silliness - the sad result of a six-year-old with middle school siblings. Innocence lost...
What we had anticipated might be a difficult about-face for our kids turned into a laugh-fest thanks to the locker room humor embedded in our sad attempt at phonetic pronunciations of Vietnamese. Whatever it takes to maintain family harmony...
