A Tale for All Seasons

To wrap up the school year (and our Greek mythology unit), the students of the ISIHA treated us to a Greek play. Follow their story in pictures.

The Story of Demeter and Persphone

Mighty Zeus and Hera, Queen of the Gods,
introduce us to the story and call forth Demeter
to recount her tale.

Demeter, Goddess of the Harvest,
arrives on the scene calling for
her beloved daughter, Persephone.

Persephone enters and dances among the flowers.

The flower delights in Persephone's joy
and laughter.

Evil Hades tries to keep a straight face as
he arrives on the scene to steal away
Persephone to be his wife.

Demeter begs Zeus to use his influence over his
evil brother, Hades, to bring her daughter back to the
world of the living, threatening to kill all life on
earth if Zeus refuses.

Demeter makes good on her threat.

Zeus calls on Hermes, the Messenger God,
to deliver his message to Hades:
Return the girl to her mother...or else!

Hades welcomes Persephone to the Underworld.

They travel by boat down the River Styx with the
Shades as their guides.

Cerberus, the vicious three-headed dog, guards the
gate to the Underworld.

Cerberus attacks Hades.

Gardeners of the Underworld

Hades attempts to woo Persephone with beautiful jewels.

Hermes arrives on the scene with his message from Zeus.
Hades relents and lets Persephone go.

The Shades cackle.  They know the truth.
Persephone took a bite from a forbidden pomegranate.

They deliver the news to Hades.

Much celebrating ensues for Persephone
must now return to the land of the dead.

In the meantime, Persephone and Demeter have
been reunited on earth.

Hades arrives on the scene to present the evidence
of Persephone's transgression.

Persephone gets a stern reprimand from her mother.
Demeter grounds her and Hades "undergrounds" her.

A tug-of-war between good and evil breaks out.
Zeus arrives just in time to break things up.

Zeus gets the lowdown from the two sides.

He seeks the cousel of Athena, Goddess of Wisdom,
who recommends a compromise: Persephone will
spend half of the year with her mother on earth and
half of the year in the Underworld with Hades.

The goofiest group of Gods and Goddesses to ever grace Mt. Olympus

And goofier still...
